Reality vs Drawings

I stumbled across these drawings today, but was unable to find who the original artist is, if anyone knows please drop me a line in the comments, I’m very keen to see if there’s any more of these beauties!

The artist has used a yet very simplistic way of making the drawings appear to be more real than they actually are by creating some form of interaction with the character. Very clever.

It’s extremely possible that the first two photos have been photoshopped to remove the part of the hand that overlaps on the drawing. I can’t really think of any other way of achieving that effect.

  2. These appear to be inspired by works of the late, great Flemish master artist of tessellations and extra-dimensional illusions, M.C. Escher.

  5. You get two layers; one has the drawing, the other has the photograph of the hand in question (without a background).

Overlap the layers (hand on top), and erase the hand carefully until the layer below shows through.

However, you have to be able to draw like THAT first.

  7. M.C. Escher Flemish? I don’t think so. He’s 100% Dutch.

I do agree however that the work here reminds me of Escher too ;)

  8. I think it may be simpler than photoshop. the paper could just be cut out and lifted.

  9. Certainly in the style of Escher but in reverse as Escher tended to blend the real into the painting . This has the cartoon coming out into the real world.

The butcher and the Samurai are awespome.

  10. These pictures do not remind me of Escher at all. This artist uses visual illusions, but nothing like what Escher did.

  11. These are cartoons. M.C. Escher may have done black and white pen and ink manipulations but he certainly was never associated with cartoons.

  12. >M.C. Escher Flemish? I don’t think so. He’s 100% Dutch

for the record, Flemish refers to people who can trace their origin back to Flanders, which is in Belgium, but has historically also included areas of France and the Netherlands. So he may have been flemish

  15. Tootielizardtush - no one here has associated Escher with cartoons - they have simply said that the drawings either remind them of Escher’s work, or feel that his work may have inspired these drawings.

  16. Would be clever if he had drawn the human hands aswell… then there would be no need for photoshop or the paper being lifted.

  17. Photoshopping is a hell of a lot easier than actually cutting paper.

  18. The Katana’s are not long enough to have cut the pencil(?) considering the drawn arc of the blades as they were slashed, and the place where the end of the pencil winds up.

The backwards hand placement of the woman, (not a ninja, there are no female ninja’s, it is a male only society), holding the Katana’s is not representative of a powerful enough blade form to achieve the cutting of anything other than herself.

    Fail
