This works through what is called “Successive Contrast”. Basically the cones in the retina in the back of your eye are ‘burned out’ by staring at a negative of the colours you will see later. When the image changes, some of your cones are exhausted and give a weaker response to the light hitting them. And yes, I do need to get a life!
